Introduction to Mnemonic Learning ================================= mvMorseCode is designed to help you quickly learn the International Morse Code letters and numbers and tests you on your knowledge until you get them all correct. We also reference the NATO phonetic alphabet which is in use by the U.S. Navy today. The 'mv' in mvMorseCode represents 'Mnemonic Visual' -- the practice of helping your memory remember difficult items by association with a visual, audible or graphic image that is easier to remember. Most often, the more unique and bizarre the associated image is, the easier it is to remember. The hint provided for each code in this program is such a mnemonic aid. The hint word uses 1-2 letter syllables to represent a di (say di, not dot), while 3 or more letters indicate a dah (don't say dash). Egg for E is our only exception. Thus, a'ground represents di-dah for the letter 'A'. The drawing helps associate the word with the code. Try to listen to the sound for each character and associate the rhythm of the code to the hint word, syllable by syllable. You want to be able to directly associate the sound with the proper letter without having to translate to a word and back again. The drawings reinforce the association, particularly when starting to learn. Code Speed: The character codes are played at a speed corresponding to 12 words per minute with standard spacing and intervals, and at a frequency of 800hz. It is better to learn at this speed than at a lower speed. You need to learn to associate the rhythm of the dihs and dahs with the character. Then, use the Test mode to test your progress--try in both send and receive mode. When you return to Tutorial mode, you can display only the characters that you still do not know. This method has been successfully used to teach Navy lookouts, Boy Scouts and sailors. Try it...you should be pleasantly surprised. HELP ==== Mode ---- Select the mode in the upper right hand corner or from the Mode menu. Tutorial: Tap the letter/number at the bottom of the screen to sound the code and display the hint for that character. Tap on the Hint button to replay the code for that character. (You can set default behavior of hints on the Preferences menu.)\x00"; Test: Resume a previously unfinished test or start a new one. Select testing on All codes, or just the Missed ones from the last test. Select Send or Receive. Once you select the desired test, the timer starts. For Send tests, tap the correct dih/dah buttons and then Send. For Receive tests, tap the appropriate character at the screen bottom. When the test is over, the score is saved. Missed codes are shown in the Missed mode. Press the Hint button for help but that code will be counted as missed, or tap the Repeat button when taking RCV tests (no penalty.) Pause the test by switching apps, powering down or tapping the Pause button. You can resume paused tests later. Auto-run: This displays the selected mode (All or Missed) in random order. Select Send to see the letter, a pause and then hear the code. Select Rcv to hear the code, a pause and then see the letter. Change these display times on the Preferences screen. Tap the Stop button or anywhere on the screen to pause Auto-run. Tap the Start button to resume. Missed vs. All -------------- Tap this to select All codes, or only codes missed on the last finished test. Hint ---- Tap this to show or replay the code's hint and sound. This may help to reinforce the word association. The Preferences screen contains an option to always display the hint. Preferences ----------- Display prompt: The time in seconds to display the code or letter (depending on Send or Rcv mode) while in Auto-run mode before the meaning is displayed. Display meaning: The time in seconds to display the meaning while in Auto-run mode before the next code is displayed. Morse code volume: Select Off to disable code sounds, or pick desired volume. The time, type of test and number of hints needed are also displayed. Clear Scores ------------ This clears all test scores that have been saved and resets the MISSED category to show all codes.
