What is mvLearning?

The mv stands for “Mnemonic Visual” learning. This describes the practice of helping your memory remember items by associating that item with a visual, audio or graphic image that is easier to remember. Most often, the more unique and bizarre the associated image is, the easier it is to remember.

We have used this learning technique to succesfully teach signal flags and morse code to lookouts in the Navy as well as Boy Scouts and sailors. You will be surprised at how well you can remember these new items.

How to use mvLearning

The software provides a hint provided for each item to be learned. This hint is the mnemonic aid. Many of them seem almost silly but that helps lodge the image in your long term memory. To associate the hint with the item (whether signal flag or morse code sequence), form in your mind as graphic a picture as possible. Make it funny, silly, or stupid…it doesn’t have to make sense. You want it to stand out in your memory. Focus on the part of the hint that contains the letter in question. As you use the software, use the hints to reinforce the images and ensure they are imprinted in your memory. The Morse Code program uses hints with syllables that match each dih and dah of the letter. Once you have learned these sequences, hearing the morse code should immediately invoke the associated hint.

Once you have gone through all the characters, you can use the Test mode to test your progress. When you return to the Tutorial mode, you can display only the items that you still do not know. Continue this until you have learned all of the material. Try it…you should be pleasantly surprised.
